Googles nearby share11/13/2023 ![]() To connect your phone number to your Google Account, head here on your phone and toggle on your device. Alternatively, if your contact has verified their Google Account with a phone number, you'll be able to use Nearby Share with them. You can change your devices name to make it more recognizable using the Device name option. Enable the Nearby Share toggle at the top. ![]() To use it, you'll need to have the email addresses for all your contacts (the one they use for their Google Account) stored in their contact information. On your Android device, navigate to Settings > Google > Devices and sharing > Nearby Share. And Hidden means no one nearby will be able to see your device, but you can still see your contacts' devices if they are trying to share something nearby. Some Contacts, as the name suggests, lets you toggle select people in your contacts list to use Nearby Share with. Choosing the first option means your phone will be visible to your contacts that have Nearby Share turned on, and you'll see devices near you with Nearby Share open. In terms of Device Visibility, you have three options: All Contacts, Some Contacts, and Hidden. You can use Nearby Share only with people in your contacts list. So, no need for any configuration in windows 10 device just needs to enable nearby share option. If you don't want to share your name when sending files or photos with other nearby devices, then it's a good idea to change your device name to something more nondescript. At that point, I think Nearby Share could go from a cool trick to a utility we can’t remember living without.Sticking with the first approach of finding it in the Google section of your Settings menu, tap on Nearby Share. And in case you missed our coverage, it functions similarly to AirDrop, but it’s for Android. Google’s Nearby Share makes it quick and easy to move files between Android and other devices, especially now that Windows support is available, but there are still uses that go under the radar. That obviously leaves out iPhones and iPads, but if Google could figure out a way to bake Nearby Share into Chrome or the Google app for iOS/iPad OS, we could have a fully cross-platform file sharing protocol in the coming months that literally anyone could use on any device. Google’s Nearby Share is natively available in Android (devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and above), so you only need to install the Windows version to start sharing files with people. Back in July, Google released the stable version of the Nearby Share for Windows. And considering Android 6.0 came out nearly five years ago, that means most people are going to have Nearby Share. This means that, in time, anything that runs desktop Chrome will have this ability. Google is rolling Nearby Share out to everyone running Android 6.0 or newer. We know it is coming to not just Chrome OS, but other desktops as well via Chrome. Google is officially launching Nearby Share for Windows, the company’s AirDrop-like tool that lets you send things like documents and photos between your Android device and your PC. This is where Nearby Share could be ubiquitous down the road. Nearby Share is a service developed by Google that allows data to be transferred between devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.It is available on their mobile and desktop operating systems, Android and ChromeOS, as well as Microsofts Windows. ![]() If nearby file sharing is going to be something people actually use, it needs to simply be baked in and there when I need or want it. While those other services are capable and functional alternatives, the fact that I have to prompt a friend or family member to install them before we can share that one, quick file is the sticking point where you lose most people. ![]() While we’ve heard in comments and emails that there are other services that do all this in one way, shape or form, there are no 3rd-party services that will simply be available to every Android and Chrome OS user out of the box in the coming months. I mentioned this at the top and it is probably the most important piece to the whole Nearby Share puzzle. ![]()
